Toyota Unveils All-New Land Cruiser 250 Series in Japan

Built for Adventure: New Land Cruiser Focuses on Off-Road Capability and Everyday Usability

Toyota announced the addition of the “250” series to its legendary Land Cruiser lineup in Japan. This new model emphasizes a return to the Land Cruiser’s roots as a rugged and capable off-road vehicle, while still offering comfort and functionality for daily driving.

Key Highlights:

Improved Off-Road Performance: The “250” series utilizes the same GA-F platform as the “300” series, delivering exceptional off-road capability. This advanced platform utilizes a ladder frame structure with the latest non-linear tailor welded blank (TWB) welding technology and ultra-high tensile strength steel plates.

This construction method achieves a significant increase in frame rigidity (50% improvement) and overall rigidity (30% improvement) compared to the Land Cruiser Prado, all while contributing to weight reduction.

The “250” series also features a newly developed suspension system with high-mount double wishbone (front) and trailing link axle (rear) configurations for optimized wheel articulation, a crucial factor for off-road performance.

Powerful Engine Options: Two engine choices are available: a 2.8-liter direct injection turbo diesel and a 2.7-liter gasoline engine. Both provide strong performance and meet strict environmental standards.

The 2.8-liter diesel boasts a maximum torque of 500 N・m (51 kgf・m) at low engine speeds (1,600 to 2,800 rpm) for impressive pulling power, while achieving a fuel efficiency of 11.0 km/L* in WLTC mode thanks to advanced emission control systems like DPR (Diesel Particulate Active Reduction System) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

The 2.7-liter gasoline engine delivers a smooth driving experience with a maximum output of 120 kW (163 PS) and maximum torque of 246 N・m (25.1 kgf・m), while achieving a fuel efficiency of 7.5 km/L* in WLTC mode through features like Dual VVT-I (continuously variable valve timing system for intake and exhaust) and a high compression ratio. (*Values reviewed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

WLTC mode is an international driving mode consisting of city, suburban, and highway driving modes with an average use time distribution.)

Focus on Functionality: The “250” series offers a spacious interior with available three-row seating and ample cargo space. The design prioritizes practicality with a focus on durability and ease of customization.

Advanced Safety Features: Standard Toyota Safety Sense with expanded detection capabilities ensures peace of mind on the road. Additionally, the “250” series offers Advanced Drive from Toyota Teammate, a driver assistance system that helps reduce fatigue in traffic congestion.

Production Location:

While the official press release doesn’t explicitly state the production location, based on Toyota’s global manufacturing footprint and the vehicle’s intended market, the Land Cruiser 250 series is likely produced at the Hamura Plant of Hino Motors, Ltd. in Japan. Hino Motors is a subsidiary of Toyota and manufactures commercial vehicles and certain Toyota models, including the Land Cruiser Prado.

Special Edition Models:

To commemorate the launch, Toyota is offering two limited-edition models: the ZX “First Edition” and VX “First Edition.” These special editions feature unique design elements and additional equipment.

Availability:

The “250” series is now available for sale in Japan, with a base sales volume target of 2,250 units per month. The model is also available through the KINTO car subscription service, offering a convenient way to access the Land Cruiser without the burden of ownership.
