Rivian R2 is so gorgeous: It’s the compact Electric Range Rover that Range Rover should have made

A Timeless Beauty

Interpreting classic designs is a difficult and potentially dangerous calling, but Rivian was successful in distilling the essence of a legendary SUV, the Range Rover with their R1, and now they have done it again with the R2.

Maintaining that gorgeous iconic face and the beautiful proportions of the R1, they have successfully shrunk the flagship model into something just as beautiful but more affordable.

Because Rivian makes such beautiful vehicles, I want them to succeed, I desperately want them to succeed because the world always needs beautiful things.

A Modern Masterpiece with a Hint of Heritage

The Rivian R2 isn’t afraid to wear its influences proudly. While some electric SUVs resemble futuristic spaceships, the R2 takes a different path. Imagine a Range Rover distilled to its purest essence, then reimagined for the modern world with a touch of rugged American flair. The result? A timeless design that transcends trends. Clean lines and a confident stance exude sophistication, while subtle hints of off-road capability promise adventures yet to be had.

This is what a modern electric Range Rover should look like, if Range Rover isn’t too hung up on making their vehicles looking like a Range Rover.

Like most classic design, they answer good questions and the original 80-inch wagon was an A+ answer to the question of what a comfortable all terrain vehicle that is at home both in the city and the wilderness should be.

Like the classic Range Rover Its design language whispers of an exploration vehicles, ready to conquer any terrain you throw at it, but with a distinctly modern urban heart that purrs silently.

The use of beautifully blended but strong shoulder line with just a series of parallel lines to define it’s volume and muscle image on a simple baseline that is elegantly carried by a simple contrasting wheelarch makes it look good from all angles.

Performance that Electrifies (Literally)

The Rivian R2 isn’t just about good looks; it’s a powerhouse waiting to be unleashed. With a starting price of $45,000 or around RM190,000 if we just convert the pricing and remember that EVs still enjoy import and excise duty exemptions, it has the potential undercuts the competition without sacrificing performance.

Sadly the exemptions ends with 2025 and the R2 is not slated for production until 2026, so I guess the market for electric SUVs in Malaysia is not under threat by this American brand, for now.

Being American, they are highly focused on range and the base two wheel drive R2 can travel 300 miles or almost 500 km with the longest legged variant capable of covering over 600km on a single charge.

No more range anxiety – just pure electric freedom.

But wait, there’s more! The top-tier models might offer a tri-motor option that would redefine the very meaning of acceleration. Picture yourself rocketing from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds – that’s faster than most supercars! It’s a thrill for those who crave a touch of exhilaration alongside their eco-friendly driving experience.

Inside the Rivian R2: A Blend of Comfort, Functionality, and Adventure

While the Rivian R2’s exterior design has captured attention with its timeless elegance, the interior promises a comfortable and functional haven for drivers and passengers alike. Here’s a glimpse into what awaits you inside the R2:

Spacious Comfort for Five: The R2 boasts a well-sized cabin designed to seat five adults comfortably. Expect ample headroom and legroom even for taller passengers, ensuring a pleasant journey on long road trips. Premium quality materials like soft-touch plastics and leather accents create a luxurious atmosphere, while ergonomic seating provides excellent support.

Driver-Centric Design with a High-Tech Twist: The Rivian R2 prioritizes the driver’s experience. A clean and uncluttered instrument panel houses a digital gauge cluster that displays all vital vehicle information in a clear and concise manner. A multifunction steering wheel puts key controls for audio, cruise control, and driver-assistance systems at your fingertips. However, unlike some electric SUVs that go entirely touchscreen, the Rivian R2 introduces an intriguing novelty: a toggle wheel interface integrated into the steering wheel itself.

Tech Integration with a Human Touch and a Twist: The Rivian R2 will undoubtedly offer a comprehensive infotainment system with features like navigation, a premium sound system, and smartphone connectivity. However, the R2 might strike a unique balance between digital convenience and physical controls. Imagine a central touchscreen for navigation and media control, but with physical buttons and knobs for climate control and seat adjustments, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. The addition of the toggle wheel interface on the steering wheel adds another layer of convenience. Imagine controlling frequently used functions like volume, zoom on the navigation map, or scrolling through menus without ever taking your hands off the wheel.

Cargo Space for Every Adventure: The Rivian R2 understands that adventure often involves gear. Fold down the rear seats, and you’ll be greeted with a generous cargo space perfect for luggage, camping equipment, or even hauling sporting gear. The optional roof rack adds further storage options for bikes, kayaks, or anything else you need for your outdoor pursuits. Hidden compartments and cubbies throughout the cabin provide additional storage for everyday essentials, keeping your belongings organized and within easy reach.

Designed for the Unexpected: Drawing inspiration from its adventurous spirit, the Rivian R2’s interior incorporates design elements that cater to those who crave the great outdoors. Easy-to-clean materials throughout the cabin make post-adventure clean-up a breeze. All-weather floor mats will protect the carpets from mud, dirt, and water. Utility features like cargo tie-down points and a potentially available 110v power outlet in the cargo area further enhance the R2’s functionality for outdoor enthusiasts.

The R2 vs. The Tesla Model Y: A Tale of Two Titans

The Rivian R2 naturally invites comparison to the current king of the electric SUV hill, the Tesla Model Y. While both offer impressive range and technology, they cater to slightly different driving personalities.

The Tech-Centric Trailblazer: Tesla Model Y

The Model Y boasts a minimalist interior dominated by a massive central touchscreen. It’s a tech haven for those who love to tinker with settings and features. In terms of performance, the standard Model Y offers a thrilling 0-60 mph time of around 5 seconds, with the high-performance variant dipping below 4 seconds.

However, the Model Y’s design leans towards a futuristic aesthetic that might not resonate with everyone. Additionally, its ground clearance is lower, making it less suitable for venturing off the beaten path.

The Timeless Adventurer: Rivian R2

The Rivian R2 takes a more traditional approach to design, offering a balance between elegance and ruggedness. While it will undoubtedly have its own tech suite, the focus seems to be on a more driver-centric experience with a blend of physical buttons and a central display. Performance-wise, the standard R2 promises a comparable 0-60 mph time to the base Model Y, with the potential tri-motor option offering a significant edge for adrenaline junkies.

The R2’s higher ground clearance and potentially more rugged construction hint at its capability to handle occasional off-road excursions, making it ideal for those who crave a touch of adventure alongside their daily commute.

The Choice is Yours

Ultimately, the decision between the Rivian R2 and the Tesla Model Y boils down to personal preference. Do you crave a minimalist, tech-forward experience, or are you drawn to a timeless design with a touch of ruggedness? Do you prioritize pure on-road performance, or do you yearn for the occasional escape from the asphalt jungle?
