Peak Power: Malaysia’s Largest EV Charging Station Reaches the Clouds

In a groundbreaking move for Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Shell Recharge has unveiled the country’s largest EV charging hub at Resorts World Genting. Perched at one of the highest points in Malaysia, this state-of-the-art facility is not just breaking records – it’s touching the sky.

Launched on July 10, 2024, the hub boasts an impressive array of 10 charging bays. The crown jewel of this installation is undoubtedly the four 360kW high-performance charging (HPC) points, capable of delivering lightning-fast charges to compatible vehicles. Complementing these are six 22kW AC chargers, ensuring a wide range of EVs can benefit from this mountaintop power source.

This ambitious project is the result of a strategic alliance between Shell Recharge, Porsche Malaysia, and Genting Malaysia Berhad. It represents a significant leap forward in Malaysia’s e-mobility landscape, promising to alleviate range anxiety for EV drivers venturing to the popular highland resort.

Seow Lee Ming, General Manager of Shell Mobility, Malaysia, emphasized the importance of this milestone: “The completion of this record-breaking Shell Recharge High-Performance Charging hub located at one of the highest altitudes in Malaysia represents a significant feat in our efforts to build EV charging connectivity in this country.”

The impact of this development is perhaps best illustrated by the capabilities it offers to high-end EVs. Christopher Hunter, CEO of Sime Darby Auto Performance (representing Porsche Malaysia), revealed that the latest Porsche Taycan can achieve a 10% to 80% charge in a mere 18 minutes using the 360kW chargers.

For Resorts World Genting, this initiative aligns perfectly with their sustainability goals. Spencer Lee, Senior Vice President for Sales & Marketing and MICE at Genting Malaysia Berhad, stated that the charging hub “accelerates our efforts in becoming Malaysia’s most EV-friendly tourist destination.”

As Malaysia continues its journey towards a greener future, this high-altitude charging station serves as a beacon of progress. It not only provides a practical solution for EV owners but also symbolizes the heights to which Malaysia’s sustainable technology aspirations have climbed.

With Shell hinting at further expansions along the East Coast Expressway corridor, it’s clear that the future of e-mobility in Malaysia is looking up – quite literally.
