The Rivian R3: the Honda-e that Honda should have made

Yes I know that this headline now looks like i am sarcastgic about Rivian’s design. Actually I,m not.

They say there is nothing original in the world, everything is derivative and Rivian is so focused on their design identity that they have been able to call on good ideas found on other vehicles, use it, and make it their own.

In this case, the rear end of the vehile looks very similar to the Honda e while at the same time looking like as if Rivian had sat in the honda design briefing and came up with their own version that didn’t get selected for production.

This compact Crossover that calls segment B home is slotted for production in 2027, which is optimistic at best but what it does have is a design that looks like it can withstand three more years of development without looking too out of date.

Obviously we are not sure what China’s adventurous EV makers will come up wwith in the meantime and there is a chance this will look all too familiar once Rivian’s factories are humming but it will still be front and centre in terms of design relevance.

A Modern Take on Classic Chic

Forget bulky SUVs; the Rivian R3 embraces a sleek and modern hatchback design. Imagine the adorable Honda e with a dash of American muscle, and you’ll get a good idea of the R3’s aesthetic.

Clean lines and a compact footprint, estimated to be shorter than 4 meters (13.1 feet) in length with a wheelbase around 2,800 mm (110.2 inches), make it perfect for navigating bustling city streets and squeezing into tight parking spots.

However, the R3 doesn’t compromise on style. Expect flush door handles, unique lighting elements, and a panoramic sunroof (optional) that will turn heads wherever you go.

Punchy Performance for City Zip

Don’t let the R3’s cute looks fool you. This little hatchback packs a punch. Rivian has hinted at two potential drivetrain options with the performance version called R3X:

  • Single Rear-Wheel Drive Motor: This configuration would prioritize efficiency, offering a balance between power and range, perfect for city driving.
  • Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive: This setup, potentially offering increased handling and traction, could be ideal for occasional ventures on wet or uneven roads.

While exact acceleration figures haven’t been revealed, expect a lively driving experience suitable for navigating city traffic and quick bursts of speed when merging onto highways.

Range Optimized for Urban Adventures

The Rivian R3 is designed for urban exploration, and its estimated driving range reflects that. While not intended for epic road trips like its bigger sibling, the R3 promises a range exceeding 250 km (around 150 miles) on a single charge – more than enough for daily commutes, errands, and weekend getaways within the city limits. With Malaysia’s growing network of charging stations, range anxiety shouldn’t be a concern for most city dwellers.

Sustainable Style for the Eco-Conscious Driver

The Rivian R3 isn’t just about good looks and peppy performance; it’s a champion for sustainability. Its electric powertrain produces zero tailpipe emissions, making it a guilt-free choice for eco-conscious Malaysians. The use of recycled materials throughout the cabin further emphasizes Rivian’s commitment to a greener future.

A Wait Worth Taking for Malaysian Drivers

While the Rivian R3 hasn’t confirmed its arrival in Malaysia yet, the company’s global ambitions give us hope. Southeast Asia, with its growing urban populations and increasing focus on sustainability, could be a perfect fit for the R3. In the meantime, keep an eye out for updates. The Rivian R3 isn’t just a car; it’s a statement piece for the modern Malaysian urbanite who prioritizes style, sustainability, and a touch of electric excitement.

However, a Note of Caution

It’s important to remember that the Rivian R3 is still in its early stages of development. Specifications, features, and even the final design might change before its official release. We’ll have to wait for further announcements from Rivian to get a clearer picture of the R3’s final form.

Still, the Rivian R3’s potential is undeniable. With its charming looks, punchy performance, and focus on sustainability, it has the potential to be a game-changer in the Malaysian electric car market. The wait might be a little longer, but for the style-conscious Malaysian driver with an eco-friendly heart, the Rivian R3 could be the perfect electric companion for navigating the exciting world of urban mobility.
