The first production line at CATL’s plant in Thuringia, Germany, went into operation and the installation and commissioning of the remaining lines are in full swing.

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has announced the mass production of lithium-ion battery cells at its first overseas plant, located in Thuringia, Germany.

The first cells from the G2 facility successfully passed all necessary tests, enabling the company to supply European customers locally.

The plant, which is set to create 2,000 local jobs, is set to have a capacity of 14 GWh, and will be divided into two main facilities: G1, a plant that will assemble cells into modules, and G2, a new plant to produce cells.

Construction of the plant began in 2019, with cell module production beginning in the third quarter of 2021.

CATL also announced plans to build a new battery production site in Hungary, its second plant in Europe, which will produce cells and modules for European automakers.
